Australia’s Modern Slavery Act 2018 requires large entities (with annual consolidated revenue ≥ A$100 million) to submit an annual Modern Slavery Statement describing their structure, operations, supply chains, identified risks, and actions to address them.
Currently, compliance is mandatory, but there are no financial penalties.
In July 2025, the Australian Government launched a public consultation on proposals to strengthen the Modern Slavery Act 2018.The consultation proposes to strengthen the act by:
- Clarify and expand mandatory reporting criteria
- Strengthen compliance and enforcement powers
- Introduce civil penalties for noncompliance
- Replace joint reporting with corporate group reporting
- Streamline voluntary reporting processes
- Require entities to notify when they cease reporting
