OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas

The OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas (2016) provides step-by-step management recommendations to be used by any company potentially sourcing any minerals or metals from conflict-affected and high-risk areas, and is intended to cultivate transparent, conflict-free supply chains and sustainable corporate engagement in the minerals sector.

What You Need to Know

Date of Adoption:
6-Apr-16

The guidance offers a government-endorsed, step-by-step framework that helps companies source minerals responsibly. It aims to ensure that trade in natural resources supports peace and development rather than fueling conflict or human rights abuses.

Built around a five-step framework for risk-based due diligence:

Step1: Establish strong company management systems
Step2: Identify and assess risks in the supply chain
Step3: Design and implement a strategy to respond to identified risks
Step4: Carry out independent third-party audits of smelters/refiner's due diligence practices
Step5: Report publicly on due diligence practices
