Scope of the Law

The law applies to French companies that employ over 5,000 people in France (including direct and indirect subsidiaries) or over 10,000 people worldwide (including subsidiaries in France and abroad).

It establishes a regime of civil liability. Individuals who suffer harm may file a civil lawsuit under French tort law to claim compensation if the harm results from a company’s failure to meet its vigilance obligations, provided that proper compliance would have prevented the damage.
