UN warns nickel mining threatens Indigenous Peoples in Indonesia

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) found that nickel mining on Halmahera Island, Indonesia, has caused irreversible environmental harm and human rights violations affecting the O'Hongana Manyawa Indigenous Peoples, including groups in voluntary isolation. The letter identifies more than 60 nickel mining concessions advanced without protective mechanisms. The CERD is calling on Indonesia to formally recognise Indigenous land rights, align domestic law with international human rights standards, and secure free, prior and informed consent to ensure a fair and sustainable energy transition.
