The Nickel boom and gender inequality in Indonesia’s mining industry

News December 18, 2025

The report commissioned by CNV Internationaal examines how the booming nickel industry in Morowali and North Morowali, Central Sulawesi, affects women and marginalized groups differently than men. It finds that rapid industrial expansion has deepened existing gender inequalities, with women losing traditional livelihoods and facing limited access to formal, secure jobs. Working conditions in the sector are poor, wages are low, and women often end up in informal, insecure employment with increased risks such as harassment. The analysis highlights significant barriers to women’s participation and benefits in the nickel value chain and calls for more gender-inclusive policies and labor protections.
